Transitional realms accommodate continuous variation among the core units.
The marine-terrestrial transitional realm is characterised by steep environmental gradients in desiccation, salinity and wave and tide disturbance, occupied by contrasting shoreline ecosystems.
It shares features of the marine and terrestrial core realms.
